Best way to lighten/darken image

I’m REALLY new to this, and am looking for something like levels/brightness contrast functions in photoshop. What’s a way to do that anyone know?

I just want to darken an image and not sure what function I’m looking for

One thing that was doing my head in was after watching that video I could manipulate the palette and make the layer brighter, but that was affecting the entire image!

After a bit of a read through the help I’ve found out that you can have each layer with it’s own palette so that now allowed me to brighten the layer without messing up everything else in the image! (Not bothered about sticking to a fixed palette for what I need this for)
