In previous versions of ProMotion you could load colors from another file (.pal or similar) through a file dialog. Right now when I try to load colors via the Colors > Load Palette Command, only the Palette List opens. This list points to the default palette foler of ProMotion and can changed to another location.
But this brings a few major problems:
-
If I switch the folder to another location, It reverts back to the default location when I next start ProMotion
-
When loading another palette folder, the Windows Quick Links are not shown in the fodler list, so I have to manually look for the folders on drive, which is tedious (if you have a lot of different projects like me ^^)
-
When working on multiple Projects switching to another palette folder just to load a single palette file is very time consuming. The old file dialog was fine and unseable in this regard
Is this behaviour intended? Did I miss something if thre is another way to do this?
Edit:
Changing the folder also crashes ProMotion a lot. Is this a local problem to me or does this happen to anyone else? I moved this post to the bugs section. Hope this is OK
Hi @visionvortex ,
the change was intentional, because it seemed more logical to provide the palette load dialog that uses preview functions. And I also wanted to separate the function that imports a palette from an image file to make it more obvious that this is possible.
Load palette vs. import from image file.
But of course I understand that it might be a but of extra step. Will see what I can do here. Any suggestions?
The problems like “forgetting” the folder and crashing was not intended and need to be fixed.
Can you send a crash report or some hint how I can make it crash?

Hi Jan,
Thanks for the answer! Much appreciated!
I have an idea indeed ^^
One thing that I am missing from PM is project configurations. Right now a project is just one file. Usually (mentally and for larger projects in general) a project consists of multiple “project” files in Pro Motion. I am amiss of a better name since “workspace” is already taken too XD
Maybe “Project Configuration” or “Project Space”. So I’ll continue with Project Space from herre.
A Project Space could hold things like a default workspace and default palette folder. So when you open a file you would skip the extra work of finding a palette folder and switching to your workspace. It would probably make sense to switch to another Project Space with a switcher similar to workspace. It is however important that there is an option to have PM remember and open the last Project Space when opening.
Other things that could benefit from a Project Space in the long run:
- Brush Sets
- Tileset Configurations
As for the crash. When I switch to another palette folder it sometimes takes very long and PM freezes. Sometimes it recovers and sometimes it crashes. The steps are just this
- Open Project
- Colors > Load Palette
- Choose Folder…
- Navigate to new folder
- Hit OK
I couldn’t get it to crash today as I tried. But it had quite the hang time (40is seconds in one instance) However, it forgot the folder I chose very time.
I already tried resetting the config via settings (reloading my keboard shortcuts afterwards) but I didn’t delete the settings folder completely.
you can access the bugreport.txt from the latest crash I experienced at http://download.visionvortex.de/bugreport.txt
Let me know If I can help in any other way ^^
