Newbie questions

Hi, recently downloaded Promotion, and I’m deciding wether to buy the full version. Got a few questions first:

  • It seems that index-colour mode is the only option and there is no 24-bit RGB mode. Is that correct?

  • Antialiasing is not available in the free mode, so I can’t test it. How does it work with index colour? AA requires specific colours to work properly, but what if the colour is not available in the palette? Or does it use transparency? But then how is this preserved if you merge down the layer?

  • Is the antialiasing shown in realtime? ie. if I drag out a line or curve, do I see the AA in realtime as I move the mouse around, or is it only added later, like how Photoshop does it (stroke path) ?

  • I can’t test the layer effects either. Is drop shadow the only one available?

  • I assume the layer effects are done with transparency, but how is this preserved if I merge down the layer and those colours have to become part of the palette?

  • I see there a many undo levels, but is there any history view for this?

Hey, welcome!

  • From what i understand, it calculates whatever color’s in between your current brush color, and colors around the canvas position you’re painting over. Then, finds the closest color in the palette.
  • It’s never unavailable, because it finds the closest calculated color in the palette. If you only have black and white, you’ll only get black or white AA applied.
  • no, not transparency
  • It’s preserved because it already exists in the palette.

  • no.
  • You only see it after releasing the left or right mouse button.

  • no

  • In any case and/or process where calculated colours doesn’t seem to exist in the current palette, there is a window that pops up and asks you how you want to go with it.
  • this vid might shed some light on it. (4:47 - 6:04)
  • side note: each layer can have their own palettes, too.
  • 2nd side note: colour manipulation and generation is pretty broad and deep in PMNG.
  • I see there a many undo levels, but is there any history view for this?

  • I think i’ve seen this window before. But i’m not sure. Tried looking it up just now and i can’t find it.
